Step 1: Pick the Right Size — ID and OD
Size is the first filter, and the most common one to get wrong. Two numbers matter:
- ID (Inner Diameter): the bore that the fluid or air actually flows through. Match this to your fitting and your required flow rate.
- OD (Outer Diameter): the outside of the hose. Match this to your clamp, grommet, or routing space.
Common ID ranges for EPDM hose:
- 2–6 mm — laboratory, instrument air, PC liquid cooling loops.
- 6–16 mm — automotive coolant, small appliance drains, beverage lines.
- 16–32 mm — heater hoses, industrial water, washer/dryer.
- 32–100 mm — large coolant return, rainwater, industrial transfer.

Step 2: Match the Wall Thickness to Your Pressure
Wall thickness controls three things at once: pressure rating, flexibility, and kink resistance. Thicker wall = stronger, but stiffer; thinner wall = more flexible, but limited pressure. Pick the wall that matches your working pressure — not the burst pressure — with a safety factor of 3–4×.
Quick wall guide:
- Thin wall (1.5–2.5 mm): drain lines, low-pressure air, instrumentation.
- Medium wall (2.5–4 mm): general-purpose water, air, light coolant.
- Thick wall (4–6 mm): radiator / heater hose, pressurized coolant, industrial water up to 10 bar.
- Heavy wall (6+ mm): steam, high-pressure washdown, custom heavy-duty service.

Step 3: Decide on Reinforcement (or None)
Reinforcement is the layer between the inner and outer EPDM — it is what turns a simple tube into a pressure hose. Choose reinforcement based on working pressure, vacuum, and how the hose will flex in service.
Three common options:
- No reinforcement (smooth bore): best for low-pressure, gravity drain, or pure fluid transfer where maximum flexibility matters — e.g. PC liquid cooling.
- Textile / polyester braid: the most common choice for radiator, heater, and industrial water hose. Adds 2–3× burst pressure while keeping the hose flexible.
- Steel wire helix / spiral: for vacuum service, large-bore suction hose, or applications with crush risk.

Step 4: Match the Hose to the Application
Once size, wall, and reinforcement are decided, the last check is the medium and the environment. EPDM handles water, steam, glycol, and most alkalis extremely well, but it is not the right choice for petroleum oil, gasoline, or concentrated hydrocarbons — for those, NBR or FKM is safer.
